Fragile - Protect From All Elements

Fragile – Protect From All Elements (Angel Row version) 2002 . h 4.5m, d 6.5m, l 7m. Cardboard, wood, brown paper cellophane, fabric
This piece was first made with the help of two local craftsmen inside my bedroom at the Khoj International Artists Workshop in Modinager, a small town just outside Dehli, in November 2001. The title refers both to the language of packaging - and the real fragility of the piece - as well as the sense of fragility, uncertainty and exposure I felt living and working in India during the bombing of Afghanistan. Part package, part ritual shelter, based on grottos, nomadic tent structures and childhood memories of bed-sheet tents, I have attempted to disguise the size of a given interior space.
